I would welcome an opportunity to walk away from the entire tech industry with a guaranteed-for-life income, allowing me to pursue dreams without them needing to be financially viable. Setting up as a high end timber boat builder without ever needing to turn a profit while still having the same income I do now is something I'd jump at immediately.
Harp player here. When I first started playing, I had a Gindick's book, Country and Blues Harmonica For the Musically Hopeless. This was maybe 35 years ago. I would recommend that book and the tape (cd? mp3?) that comes with it, for beginners.
You can't see the notes you are playing on a harmonica. You have to hear them. You start by playing clear single notes and then shaping the note by articulating eeeh-yah or something similar and the note magically bends. You have to hear the note so you can tell if the note bends. It is very organic, and I don't think an app will help much. It may confirm what is happening, but it is not going to help if you can't do it.
Personally, I played along with Little Walter's greatest hits on my hour long morning commute, and eventually it was just natural to bend the notes at the right time.
My advice is to look for Jason Ricci on YouTube. He has hundreds or thousands of videos on beginner to advanced subjects. He is a weird dude, but I've never known a better teacher.

The "How it was made" section of the README was not less interesting than the tool itself:

Most suggestions of this nature fail to explain how they will deal with the problem of people just seeing there’s no point in trying for more. On a personal level, I’ve heard people from Norway describe this problem for personal income tax—at some point (notably below a typical US senior software engineer’s earnings) the amount of work you need to put in for the marginal post-tax krone is so high it’s just demotivating, and you either coast or emigrate. Perhaps that’s not entirely undesirable, but I don’t know if people have contemplated the consequences of the existence of such a de facto ceiling seriously.

When I asked the normal "How many 'r' in strawberry" question, it gets the right answer and argues with itself until it convinces itself that its (2). It counts properly, and then says to it self continuously, that can't be right.

There is likely to be a great rift in how very talented people look at sharper tools.
I've seen the same division pop up with CNC machines, 3d printers, IDEs and now LLMs.
If you are good at doing something, you might find the new tool's output to be sub-par over what you can achieve yourself, but often the lower quality output comes much faster than you can generate.
That causes the people who are deliberate & precise about their process to hate the new tool completely - expressing in the actual code (or paint, or marks on wood) is much better than trying to explain it in a less precise language in the middle of it. The only exception I've seen is that engineering folks often use a blueprint & refine it on paper.
There's a double translation overhead which is wasteful if you don't need it.
If you have dealt with a new hire while being the senior of the pair, there's that familiar feeling of wanting to grab their keyboard instead of explaining how to build that regex - being able to do more things than you can explain or just having a higher bandwidth pipe into the actual task is a common sign of mastery.
The incrementalists on the other hand, tend to love the new tool as they tend to build 6 different things before picking what works the best, slowly iterating towards what they had in mind in the first place.
I got into this profession simply because I could Ctrl-Z to the previous step much more easily than my then favourite chemical engineering goals. In Chemistry, if you get a step wrong, you go to the start & start over. Plus even when things work, yield is just a pain there (prove it first, then you scale up ingredients etc).
Just from the name of sketch.dev, it appears that this author is of the 'sketch first & refine' model where the new tool just speeds up that loop of infinite refinement.
There are a lot of methods, optimized for different purposes. Some are easy to learn, but take a very large number of moves to solve the cube. Some are exactly the opposite: Difficult to learn, but enables you to solve the cube in just a few seconds. Others are optimized for solving the cube in the fewest possible number of moves, but requires so much thinking that they are not suitable for fast solutions. Others again are optimized for blindfolded solving.
My two favorite methods are Roux and 3-style.
Roux is the second most common method for speedsolving. Compared to the more popular CFOP method, Roux is more intuitive (in the sense that you mostly solve by thinking rather than by executing memorized algorithms), and requires fewer moves. Roux is much more fun than CFOP, if you ask me, and for adults and/or people who are attracted to the puzzle-solving nature of the cube rather than in learning algorithms and finger-tricks, I think it's easier to learn. Kian Mansour's tutorials on YouTube is a good place to start learning it.
3-style is a method designed for blindfolded solving, but it's a fun way to solve the cube even in sighted solves. It's a very elegant way to solve the cube, based on the concept of commutators. It takes a lot of moves compared to Roux, but the fun thing is that it can be done 100% intuitively, without any memorized algorithms (Roux requires a few, though not nearly as many as CFOP). It's satisfactory to be able to solve the cube in a way where you understand and can explain every single step of your solution. As an added bonus, if you know 3-style, you can easily learn blindfolded solving, which is tremendously fun, and not nearly as difficult as it sounds.
Edit: If you do decide you want to learn, make sure you get a good modern cube. The hardware has advanced enormously since the 1980s, modern cubes are so much easier and more fun to use. There are plenty of good choices. Stay away from original Rubik's cubes, get a recent cube from a brand like Moyu, X-man or Gan.

Fun to see this on HN today; I just finished it last night, on a recommendation from a friend. It was great, and left me full of unfinished thoughts -- just what you want from a good SF yarn.

It gives you a history of how batch processing started with MapReduce, and how attempts at scaling by moving towards streaming systems gave us all the subsequent frameworks (Spark, Beam, etc.).
As for the framework called MapReduce, it isn't used much, but its descendant https://beam.apache.org very much is. Nowadays people often use "map reduce" as a shorthand for whatever batch processing system they're building on top of.
A little bit of history about the book series may help understand what is in it.
In 1956, Knuth graduated high school and entered college, where he encountered a computer for the first time (the IBM 650, to which the series of books is dedicated). He took to programming like a fish to water, and by the time he finished college in 1960, he was a legendary programmer, single-handedly writing several compilers on par with or better than professionals (and making good money too). In 1962 when he was a graduate student (and also, on the side, a consultant to Burroughs Corporation), the publisher Addison Wesley approached him with a proposal to write a book about writing compilers (given his reputation), as these techniques were not well-known. He thought about it and decided that the scope ought to be broader: programming techniques were themselves not well-known, so he would write about everything: “the art of computer programming”.
This was a time when programming a computer meant writing in that computer's machine code (or in an assembly language for that machine) — and some of those computers were little more than simple calculators with branches and load/store instructions. The techniques he would have to explain were things like functions/subroutines (a reusable block of assembly code, with some calling conventions), data structures like lists and tries, how to do arithmetic (multiplying integers and floating-point numbers and polynomials), etc. He wrote up a 12-chapter outline (culminating in "compiler techniques" in the final chapter), and wrote a draft against it. When it was realized the draft was too long, the plan became to publish it in 7 volumes.
He had started the work with the idea that he would just be a “journalist” documenting the tricks and techniques of other programmers without any special angle of his own, but unavoidably he came up with his own angle (the analysis of algorithms) — he suggested to the publishers to rename the book to “the analysis of algorithms”, but they said it wouldn't sell so ACP (now abbreviated TAOCP) it remained.
He polished up and published the first three volumes in 1968, 1969, and 1973, and his work was so exhaustive and thorough that he basically created the (sub)field. For example, he won a Turing Award in 1974 (for writing a textbook, in his free time, separate from his research job!). He has been continually polishing these books (e.g. Vols 1 and 2 are in their third edition that came out in 1997, and already nearly the 50th different printing of each), offering rewards for errors and suggestions, and Volume 4A came out in 2011 and Volume 4B in 2023 (late 2022 actually).
Now: what is in these books? You can look at the chapter outlines here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Art_of_Comput... — the topics are low-level (he is interested in practical algorithms that one could conceivably want to write in machine code and actually run, to get answers) but covered in amazing detail. For example, you may think that there's nothing more to say about the idea of “sequential search” than “look through an array till you find the element”, but he has 10 pages of careful study of it, followed by 6 pages of exercises and solutions in small print. Then follow even more pages devoted to binary search. And so on.
(The new volumes on combinatorial algorithms are also like that: I thought I'd written lots of backtracking programs for programming contests and whatnot, and “knew” backtracking, but Knuth exhausted everything I knew in under a page, and followed it with dozens and dozens of pages.)
If you are a certain sort of person, you will enjoy this a lot. Every page is full of lots of clever and deep ideas: Knuth has basically taken the entire published literature in computer science on each topic he covers, digested it thoroughly, passed it through his personal interestingness filter, added some of his own ideas, and published it in carefully written pages of charming, playful, prose. It does require some mathematical maturity (say at the level of decent college student, or strong high school student) to read the mathematical sections, or you can skim through them and just get the ideas.
But you won't learn about, say, writing a React frontend, or a CRUD app, or how to work with Git, or API design for software-engineering in large teams, or any number of things relevant to computer programmers today.
Some ways you could answer for yourself whether it's worth the time and effort:
• Would you read it even if it wasn't called “The Art of Computer Programming”, but was called “The Analysis of Algorithms” or “Don Knuth's big book of super-deep study of some ideas in computer programming”?
• Take a look at some of the recent “pre-fascicles” online, and see if you enjoy them. (E.g. https://cs.stanford.edu/~knuth/fasc5b.ps.gz is the one about backtracking, and an early draft of part of Volume 4B. https://cs.stanford.edu/~knuth/fasc1a.ps.gz is “Bitwise tricks and techniques” — think “Hacker's Delight” — published as part of Volume 4A. Etc.)
I find reading these books (even if dipping into only a few pages here and there) a more rewarding use of time than social media or HN, for instance, and wish I could make more time for them. But everyone's tastes will differ.
I used to live in an RV & cabins park in a very dark area, actually inside of the radius of the Very Large Array radio telescope. As part of a barter arrangement I made a website for the park. On the site I pitched the park as a destination for amateur astronomers. Come camp inside of a telescope! We put up some Google ads to that effect.
I don't think they ever got a nibble from that. It turns out that the population of amateur astronomers willing to drive long distances to dark spots isn't all that large.
But this is the internet, and a niche interest can have a significant following, and you're not trying to make a bunch of money with this. So from us dark sky lovers, thanks.

Total end-to-end latency is a few hundred milliseconds: starting from speech to text, to the LLM, then to a POS to validate the SKU (no hallucinations are possible!), and finally back to generated speech. The latency is starting to feel really natural. Building out a general system to achieve this low-latency will I think end up being a big unlock for enabling diverse applications.
These don't cover iptables and other firewalls themselves, but they give you enough knowledge that you can read the iptables manpage and other manuals and understand them.
The 8266 was based off an xtensa core instead of an Arm core which is the norm in the industry. Espressif created a replacement for this wildly popular chip with the C3 and based it off RISC-V to keep up with the times and the community. No more toolchain complaints from the community, plus they get to use open standards like RISC instead of xtensa from Tensilica. The never-ARM approach from Espressif has worked out well for them over multiple other alternatives that they chose over the years.
If someone writes a book on the downfall of Arm in a few years, this is going to be a very interesting chapter IMO.

I wonder how far off we are from something like the battle school game from the book Ender's Game. That is, an immersive video game that uses player actions, choices, exploration etc. in order to generate not only new content, but entirely new game rules on the fly. It feels like we're getting closer and closer to Ender's holographic terminal with VR interfaces + AI content.

pwsafe, still is the safest CLI-only solution to date. The design of pwsafe (Password Safe CLI) got started by Bruce Schnier, the crypto security privacy expert. In pwsafe, unbroken TwoFish algorithm is still being used instead of currently safer Argon2i, simply because it's faster (after millions of iterations). The recommended client-wise of PasswordSafe is still Netwrix (formerly MATESO of Germany) PasswordSafe with YubiKey but stay away from its web-client variants due to ease of memory access to JavaScript variable names (by OS, browser, JS engine, and JS language)
Only downside for ANY PasswordSafe-design GUI client is trusting yet another app repository source.

This applies to many non-fiction best-sellers in the self-help and pop science categories, but is very unfair as a generalization about non-fiction. (And bloat is not restricted to non-fiction, either: do we really need 10,000 pages of Wheel of Time or Stormlight Archive?).
I'm looking at my bookshelves now and see great books like Ryan's "A Bridge Too Far," Peltzold's "Code", Hodges' "The Enigma," Koestler's "The Sleepwalkers," Churchill's "Marlborough." None of these feel "bloated" or "padded" (okay maybe "Marlborough" is a little bloated). None of them were written to convey a handful of ideas to make you look smart at a cocktail party. Surely the information in these books could be condensed, but that condensed form wouldn't produce the same experience.
I was this person! I was eager and kind. But I was incompetent. I was a graduate of the first ever cohort of the first ever coding bootcamp. The teachers were great, but they didn’t check in on me or have evaluations. I left not really being able to do…anything.
But I got a job as a Ruby developer from resourcefulness and eagerness. It was a great company. It was clear, however, that I wasn’t pulling my weight when the intern was technically running circles around me. They do the only right thing. They made some “bare minimum” requirements in the form of an evaluation and gave me three weeks to complete it. I couldn’t do it. I was getting much better by the end of the three weeks thanks to a coworker who decided to mentor me, but it was past my ability level. When this was clear and they were firing me I said to the CTO “you can fire me, but I am getting good at learning, so I am going to just study really hard and reapply in 3 months and you’ll have to give me another chance!” I said this in a motivated way, not an insane person way. He decided he would find another spot to put me in the company.
He ended up putting me on the technical integrations team. The other person on that team was an incredibly kind human who loved teaching people. It was perfect for me. I ended up performing super well in that role and became very good at it. It was a win/win for the organization.
I will tell you one thing, however. The weeks before they gave me that evaluation were the most stressful weeks of my life. I was waking up in the middle of the night immediately stressed. It feels terrible to be bad at your job. It felt so freeing to be given the evaluation. Because it was cut and dry. I could do it or I couldn’t, but at least there would be finality. It is kind to not let someone flounder in a role that is past their abilities. I am grateful he found another spot for me to fit at the company. That CTO has passed now at a young age, but I owe my career to him recognizing my passion and finding another spot for me. Thanks Brandon Dewitt!
