I happen to have some first-hand knowledge around the subject! In 2014 someone did a talk[0] on disabling the camera on some older Macbooks. It was fairly trivial, basically just reflashing the firmware that controlled the LED. I worked on the security team at Apple at the time and in response to this I attempted to do the same for more modern Macbooks. I won't go into the results but the decision was made to re-architect how the LED is turned on. I was the security architect for the feature.

A custom PMIC for what's known as the forehead board was designed that has a voltage source that is ALWAYS on as long as the camera sensor has power at all. It also incorporates a hard (as in, tie-cells) lower limit for PWM duty cycle for the camera LED so you can't PWM an LED down to make it hard to see. (PWM is required because LED brightness is somewhat variable between runs, so they're calibrated to always have uniform brightness.)

On top of this the PMIC has a counter that enforces a minimum on-time for the LED voltage regulator. I believe it was configured to force the LED to stay on for 3 seconds.

This PMIC is powered from the system rail, and no system rail means no power to the main SoC/processor so it's impossible to cut the 3 seconds short by yoinking the power to the entire forehead board.

tl;dr On Macbooks made after 2014, no firmware is involved whatsoever to enforce that the LED comes on when frames could be captured, and no firmware is involved in enforcing the LED stay on for 3 seconds after a single frame is captured.

Further, there is a CRL/OCSP cache — which means that if you're running a program frequently, Apple are not receiving a fine-grained log of your executions, just a coarse-grained log of the checks from the cache's TTL timeouts.

Also, a CRL/OCSP check isn't a gating check — i.e. it doesn't "fail safe" by disallowing execution if the check doesn't go through. (If it did, you wouldn't be able to run anything without an internet connection!) Instead, these checks can pass, fail, or error out; and erroring out is the same as passing. (Or rather, technically, erroring out falls back to the last cached verification state, even if it's expired; but if there is no previous verification state — e.g. if it's your first time running third-party app and you're doing so offline — then the fallback-to-the-fallback is allowing the app to run.)

Remember that CRLs/OCSP function as blacklists, not whitelists — they don't ask the question "is this certificate still valid?", but rather "has anyone specifically invalidated this certificate?" It is by default assumed that no, nobody has invalidated the certificate.

To begin approximating what a lone spherical synapse would actually do you'd need to solve 2^n coupled second order differential equations where n is the number of ions used.

That is before you throw in things like neuro transmitters and the physical volume of a cell. Simulating a single neuron accurately is beyond any super computer today. The question is how inaccurately can we simulate one and still get meaningful answers.

Then how we do it 100e9 more times.

The audio CD thing is pretty clever. Even if you don't know important factors like the maximum frequency, you can get a great guess based on what you already know... like knowing Freddie Mercury could sing four octaves, starting from probably somewhere above "transformer hum sound".

You'd have to know each octave doubles in frequency.

Side quest: When you play the bugle, the played frequency increases or decreases by MULTIPLES of the base frequency---NOT powers of 2. Suppose this base frequency is 250 Hz. There is an octave from 250 to 500, but there's a note between the octave from 500 to 1000 at 750 Hz, and a few notes between 1000 and 2000 Hz, which is the part of the musical scale something like Reveille is played. If Reveille jumped from octave to octave, it would just sound like the intro to Justin Hawkin's cover of This Town Ain't Big Enough.

So, if you know transformer hum is 50 or 60 Hz and Queen's frontman starts his singing at 100 Hz, then he can sing up to 1600 Hz, or four octaves. Mentally recalling what his falsetto sounds like, you can imagine a really high-pitched guitar solo an octave above this, and you can still imagine what an octave above that would sound like. (Maybe you're getting close to dog whistle territory in your imagination.)

This, then, is 6400 Hz you are imagining. The top of each sound wave to the top of the next is 6400 Hz. To record this, you'd need the top AND bottom of each sound wave, because the speaker cone moving from maximum to minimum displacement is how the sound is made. If you want to make sure you aren't accidentally recording the middle (zero crossing) of each wave, you can even take three or four or five samples per sound wave instead of two. It's a lot of thought, but you can reasonably decide that 25000 Hz is a good sampling rate for capturing much of the range of human hearing. Going too far beyond that, you're wasting storage space.

A CD holds a bit more than an hour of music, or 3600 seconds. If you've listened to Dire Straits, Eagles, Cyndi Lauper, Metallica, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, ELP, or nearly any other band, you're probably aware the recordings have independent left and right channels.

Finally, each sample is going to be somewhere between "speaker fully retracted" and "speaker fully extended". With 5 bits, this gives 16 "stops" from the middle point to fully extended. But we know that music can get really quiet when it fades out, and a lot of volume knobs can go from zero to thirty and sometimes higher. When you have the volume at one, you can still tell the difference between loud parts and quiet parts, so you'd need an extra 5 bits just to get good dynamic range at loudest and quietest volume settings, or 10 bits. What happens when you double this? If you have 20 bits, you are probably close to wasting bits. You have a million places where the speaker coils can move to. For a speaker that moves a few millimeters, this means 20-bit resolution allows steps of a few nanometers. This is the scale of computer chips and color wavelengths. If you took the color blue and shifted its wavelength by a few nanometers, it would still be practically the same shade of blue! Without knowing about bit depth, you can reasonably assume 16 bits is good because it's a power of two and will give a lot of dynamic range. 8 would be too low. 32 is just wasteful.

With 32 bits, a speaker capable of moving 1 cm end-to-end will have 10 carbon atom diameters of linear resolution. The ears are impressive, but I don't know they can differentiate the air displacement of (speaker cone area) x (ten carbon atoms). Even having 0 to 100 on the volume knob, this leaves 25 bits of range at each volume setting. This is audiophile (and arguably, snake oil) territory.

So then, you can say 3600 seconds is pretty close to 3000 seconds, 2 channels is close to 3, 16 bits is close to 10, 25000 Hz is close to 30000 Hz... 3 x 3 x 3 x 10 x 1000 x 10000 ≈ 3,000,000,000. Since a byte has about 10 bits, divide by ten, and this yields a first approximation---based on logic reasoning of what we know---of 300 MB. It's wrong, but it's not "very" wrong. (It's off by a factor of two, not a factor of ten! Not bad for 4 rounded, intermediate conversion terms...)

(The idea is to round each term to a value starting with 1 or 3, because multiplying 3 and 3 is close to 10. The reason 2 is close to 3: 10^(1/2) = 3.16. This states that a good midpoint of 1 and 10 is 3.16, because if you square each term, you get: 1, 10, 100. Now, 10^(1/4) = 1.78. This means that any value less than 1.78 would be closer to 1 after squaring, and any value higher will be closer to 10.)

You can even take the analysis further and back-calculate things like how fast the CD might spin by guessing the track width and bit area, how long a track skip would be, whether the size limitation of the CD is due to optical or material properties, how far the laser would need to be to converge at one bit while being close enough that any deviation in the surface flatness doesn't send the return beam away from the sensor, etc. (This is all the info you'd probably use to begin the approximation if you weren't aware an audio CD holds an hour of music, like if you were asked in 1975 to "back of envelope" whether a compact, non-contact, vinyl-like, LP-length recording medium was possible.)


The portrait modes on these are getting really good. The blur is pretty convincing looking. The only open-source software I know that does similar stuff is body-pix which does matting, but I don't think it generates a smooth depth map like this thing. It would be cool because then you can do a clever background blur for your Zoom backgrounds with v4l2-loopback webcam.

(1) Start a freelance practice.

(2) Raise your rates.

(3) As you work for clients, keep a sharp eye for opportunities to build "specialty practices". If you get to work on a project involving Mongodb, spend some extra time and effort to get Mongodb under your belt. If you get a project for a law firm, spend some extra time thinking about how to develop applications that deal with contracts or boilerplates or PDF generation or document management.

(4) Raise your rates.

(5) Start refusing hourly-rate projects. Your new minimum billable increment is a day.

(6) Take end-to-end responsibility for the business objectives of whatever you build. This sounds fuzzy, like, "be able to talk in a board room", but it isn't! It's mechanically simple and you can do it immediately: Stop counting hours and days. Stop pushing back when your client changes scope. Your remedy for clients who abuse your flexibility with regards to scope is "stop working with that client". Some of your best clients will be abusive and you won't have that remedy. Oh well! Note: you are now a consultant.

(7) Hire one person at a reasonable salary. You are now responsible for their payroll and benefits. If you don't book enough work to pay both your take-home and their salary, you don't eat. In return: they don't get an automatic percentage of all the revenue of the company, nor does their salary automatically scale with your bill rate.

(8) You are now "senior" or "principal". Raise your rates.

(9) Generalize out from your specialties: Mongodb -> NoSQL -> highly scalable backends. Document management -> secure contract management.

(10) Raise your rates.

(11) You are now a top-tier consulting group compared to most of the market. Market yourself as such. Also: your rates are too low by probably about 40-60%.

Try to get it through your head: people who can simultaneously (a) crank out code (or arrange to have code cranked out) and (b) take responsibility for the business outcome of the problems that code is supposed to solve --- people who can speak both tech and biz --- are exceptionally rare. They shouldn't be; the language of business is mostly just elementary customer service, of the kind taught to entry level clerks at Nordstrom's. But they are, so if you can do that, raise your rates.

I would add: "As much as they possibly can in tax-advantaged accounts, and then more!" And it turns out, you can save a shit ton in a tax advantaged way.

Let's look at 2020 limits, and assume a married couple, under 50, with one person earning as a software engineer:

$19,500 max contribution to a pre-tax 401(k). Many companies match. You should contribute all $19.5k, not just what you can to get the full match. If you're over 50, do the $6,500 catch-up.

But that's not all. The IRS limit on combined employer/employee contributions is $57,000. So if your employer allows it, contribute the remaining $37,500 post-tax and then convert it to a Roth IRA to at least get the earnings and withdrawal tax advantage (commonly known as the "mega-backdoor Roth").

$12,000 to an IRA (or Roth), $6,000 from both you and your spouse. If you like Roth but are beyond the income limits for the Roth, do the "regular backdoor Roth".

$7,100 to a family HSA. If your company offers it, do it. It's triple tax advantaged when used for health expenses.

Although they are old-school and don't yield much, US savings bonds can be a decent way to fill up an emergency fund. They are exempt from state taxes, and interest may be excluded from Federal income tax when used to finance education. There are a few to choose from, I particularly like the Series-I bonds. The government limits individuals to $10,000 per year for a total of $20,000 for a married couple.

So, if you are a very high earner, and are fortunate enough you can max all of these, you can save $96,100 per year, with some kind of tax advantage. There is probably more that I'm not thinking of. You should probably do all of these before you even think about looking at fully-taxed investments like your retail stock broker.


Hackintoshes are very stable if:

- You buy the right hardware. Intel CPU and AMD GPU. Choose Ryzen if you like those and like tinkering and hacking on your OS a lot. And no, it's very unlikely your Nvidia GPU will ever work with a recent macOS.

- You use the vanilla method of macOS install. The dortania guides along with /r/hackintosh are all you need. Avoid tonymacx86, insanelymac, and any software with the word "beast" in the name. Run screaming from them. Do not mess with the OS install, do not put any kexts into the OS install. Put everything into EFI.

- You set aside the occasional day for OS updates (and possibly updating OpenCore). You do not want to update willy-nilly and you definitely want to wait a day or few for the more brave to guinea pig any issues.

I've been using a 8700K/RX580 hackintosh for years now, and in many ways, it's been more stable than my actual Macs -- and certainly more modular and expandable.

Surprisingly, that reasoning doesn't necessarily actually work.

It turns out that there are actually several different mechanisms by which a filter can stop particles.

Big particles, for example, might not fit between the gaps in the filter--think fish in a net. This is called sieving.

Particles that are too small for sieving but are heavier than the surrounding flow keep moving in a straight line when the flow goes around the filter fibers. They collide with the fibers and get stuck. This is called inertial impaction.

The smallest particles that the filter can handle are not held in place by the fluid they are flowing in and so move around a lot by diffusion. This diffusion can lead them to hitting the fibers and getting stuck.

Particles too big for diffusion but too small for inertial impaction can follow the flow around fibers, but in doing so they can still hit the fiber and get stuck. This is called interception.

There are also electrostatic effects with some filter materials that can ensnare some kinds of particles.

When you put this all together, the result is that filters do not work the way we would intuitively expect, where there is some particular size and everything above that is stopped and everything below that makes it through. That would only be true if sieving was the only mechanism in play.

The curves of efficiency vs. particle size for all of the non-electrostatic mechanisms are S curves. As size goes up, sieving, inertial impact, and interception all go up, but at different rates.

Sieving's curve rising section is almost vertical. Inertial impact's is fairly rapid but nowhere near as rapid as sieving's. Interception's is much more relaxed.

Diffusion is also an S curve, but it goes the other way, being high for small particles and dropping for large particles.

When you add them all up you end up with a curve that is high and flat for small particles, then dips down around some particular size, and then rises back up to high efficiency.

There's some nice illustrations and graphs here [1].

This is why 0.3 microns is used when rating HEPA filters. It's around the size that is hardest for them to handle.

Disclosure: am a dev working in the MCN business.

The "private data" the app collected, is used, for most part, fingerprint the unique user.

In every MCN app, there was a huge fake user problem. If an app collect zero identifiable fingerprint, then a spammer can easily fake millions of views and manipulate ranked content. The app developers are asked think clever to collect every piece of info they can, while spammers spent night and days spoof every parameter in a virtual machine or even on a matrix of remote controlled real phones.

For example, if a iPhone 11 user logs in, but only with screen resolution of 320x240, is it legit? I have caught tens of thousands of fake users with simple checks like this. However the tricks expires pretty quickly, you have to move on with new feature checks, together with decision trees and bayesian networks.

Some of the fingerprint collecting SDKs are even using native code to check some ARM specific instructions to tell if the device is fake or not. The parameters check had to be done in every important API calls, or spammers can easily pretend be good citizen during parameter checking process and swap the session to a cheaper VM/phone or spam the targeted API with scripts.

Chinese companies all have their own team dealing with frauds or spamming on daily basis, the same way as everything can be faked in China.

Think cyber attacks from Chinese IPs are bad? Now imagine doing business in China and all users of your product are bots, what methods do you have to filter out the real human users? Good luck.

Many ads network SDKs are collecting user data in the same way. Otherwise it's easy to spoof fake clicks and page views.

I not stating if it's the right or wrong thing to do, I am just saying it's how things are done in current state of business.

Every time I read these threads, I'm 1. Flattered by how sophisticated HN thinks our systems are (they're not. and we're not that smart. FB's A-team stopped working on ads a long time ago) 2. Entertained by how HN thinks ad targeting works (we don't want to know everything about YOU. we want to know basic info about all of our users.)

Hypertargeting doesn't work. Targeting small audiences doesn't provide marketing scale and is extremely expensive. The goal is to have the biggest possible audience, while still applying one or two critical filters. You could hit all 1000 people in a pool for $100 each, or you can hit 1000 people in a pool of 1 million for 50 cents each.

The main priority here is to enable "Show ads to people who own an Oculus" level targeting. This means that people selling VR-adjacent services, products, and content can reliably advertise to their core market without wasting money on non-users. Or maybe they can filter out that segment to show different ads to non-users that convince them to buy their first device. I know most on HN hate any level of targeting, but this has a massive benefit to the VR ecosystem because it allows VR companies to reach their customers much more effectively and sell more products.

FB is actually stripping away features from our targeting system and removing inputs because we spend too much compute power ($$) driving optimizations that don't have any material impact on delivery value. Basic is better. There's no meaningful business value to capturing biometrics or pictures of things in your home. Also, ethics. We do actually think about that a lot these days - it just took us a while to clean up short-sighted product decisions made a decade ago.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Europe, Canada, and Australia have all been moving in the above direction (at least slowly) over the past 30 years, marking a period of return to growth after decades of economic doldrums where they were uncompetitive with the USA.

There is even less disagreement when it gets into microeconomics. Everyone agrees that markets produce efficient prices so long as you account for externalities. So for example, an EPI study polled economists about the $15 minimum wage (who identified as Democrats 3:1 as compared with Republicans): https://www.johnlocke.org/update/what-do-economists-think-ab.... 75% thought it would negatively affect employment, and 84% agreed it would hurt youth employment.

Indeed, the consensus on government price controls is so deep that, with the exception of isolated things like rent control and the minimum wage, where people don't perceive it as price regulation, even liberals don't really call for price regulation. That is remarkable, because price regulation was a feature of life until the 1970s. Airline tickets, freight trucking, phone bills--all were priced not based on markets, but based on bureaucrats picking numbers.


I wouldn't put it that way. It has more to do with avoiding too much repetition and making sure the front page isn't completely dominated by hot controversies, which would defeat the purpose of the site. HN has been flooded with China-related stories in the last couple months and most especially the last few days. They have been the dominant topic recently, understandably, as they are some of the leading events in current affairs right now. Important as these stories are, HN's core value being intellectual curiosity requires going easy on repetition—any repetition about anything.

There's a power-law dropoff in curiosity as a thing gets repeated. Other emotions—such as indignation—work the opposite way, so this is an existential issue for this site: the more repetition we have, the more HN's purpose gets drowned out and replaced by something that is inimical to it. This is the explanation of hamandcheese's conundrum upthread, about how a story about the ongoing struggle in Hong Kong, with lots of upvotes, can possibly be ranked lower than something called "The Origin of the Foot Rail". The answer is that indignation is by far the most powerful force on the internet, and as moderators our main job is literally to moderate that, so quieter, odder, less important but more curious stories have a chance to flourish.

If we didn't do that, HN would simply become a political outrage site like most other places. The front page would always be the top 30 outrages in the world, or more likely the top 5 outrages repeated 6 times each. That's the default, so if you want to run a site for intellectual curiosity, you need countervailing mechanisms. Here the countervailing mechanisms are software and moderators. But software+moderators also get many of these calls wrong, and we rely on users to let us know about those cases.

I know that users who feel strongly about these stories still feel like they're under-represented. But it always feels that way about any topic on HN that you feel strongly about. Frontpage space is the scarcest resource here, and there's never enough to go around. Even if your story is the most-covered story on HN, if you feel strongly about it, you will probably feel like it's being unfairly suppressed. As I've said too many times already: even Rust hackers probably feel that way.

If you read about the significant-new-information test in the first link above, the best way to help us with this is to let us know which stories have the most significant new information, relative to which are the follow-ups and copycat pieces. They have 30+ levels where you ssh into a server and attempt to find some type of vulnerability. They start out very easy and get tough quick. It’s very eye opening to see the types of exploits that exist.

They also have a set of challenges aimed at serverside web security. http://overthewire.org/wargames/natas/ I went through the web challenges last year and they helped a ton in my web dev roles.


This describes research published in 2012 by Arjen Lenstra et al. (https://eprint.iacr.org/2012/064.pdf), which relied on a scalable n-way GCD algorithm that Lenstra's team thought best not to explain to readers (in the hope that the attack wouldn't be quickly replicated for malicious purposes). Coincidentally, another team (Nadia Heninger et al., https://factorable.net/) published extremely similar research in a similar timeframe, without withholding details of that team's GCD calculation approach.

The Heninger et al. paper explains quite a lot about where the underlying problems came from, most often inadequately seeded PRNGs in embedded devices. As the linked article mentions, other subsequent papers have also analyzed variants of this technique and so there's not much secret left about it.

Notably, my puzzle uses a small set of keys so you can do "easy" pairwise GCD calculations rather than needing an efficient n-way algorithm as described here (which becomes increasingly relevant as the number of keys in question grows).

As someone who has recently started figuring out this whole ADHD thing, definitely seek out help for it. There are a ton of really powerful tools and support systems that make a tremendous difference. Especially organizational systems designed for people with executive function deficits (whether that's ADHD or not, doesn't really matter!)

I hope they do become profitable, but I'm skeptical they will.

1) Their losses are growing, not shrinking. From March 2017 to now, they lost $330M, $336M, $619M, $675M, and $785M. Maybe they hit a tipping point and there is an abrupt change, but it seems like the more natural trajectory would be for losses to become smaller and then turn into profits.

Tesla is a really cool company, but it's hard to see a future where they justify their share price. Let's say that Tesla becomes the next Toyota 15 years from now. Toyota is only worth $213B. So, the kinda max value for Tesla is around 4x their current price. So, under really rosy conditions, Tesla appreciates at 12% per year over the next 15 years. That's not bad, but the likelihood that Tesla is the next Toyota is very small.

Let's say that Tesla is incredibly successful and becomes the next Volkswagen, Daimler, or BMW (the #2, 3, and 4 auto makers by market cap). They'd be a $106B, $85B, or $73B company. That doesn't leave much for price appreciation over their current $51B market cap.

Maybe Tesla can make a company that's way more profitable per vehicle and sell so many vehicles. But that's a bit of a moon-shot.

It seems more likely that Tesla will become a company like Subaru ($26B), Mazda ($8B), Nissan ($43B), Ford ($44B), Hyundai Motor ($40B), Fiat Chrysler ($34B), Renault ($32B), PSA Peugeot Citroën ($22B), Suzuki Motor ($26B), GM ($51B), or Honda ($60B). Those are all very successful auto companies. If Tesla becomes the next Mazda 15 years from now, that will be incredibly bad for investors. Basically, if Tesla doesn't become the next Toyota, it seems hard to believe Tesla won't underperform the market by a lot.

It's possible that Tesla will become the next Toyota, but unlikely. Comparing Tesla's market cap with that of most auto manufacturers makes you realize that investing in Tesla isn't just betting that Tesla will become a great volume car company like Mazda. They have to become the car company.

When investing, it's also important to note that money later is less valuable than money now and account for risk. Tesla is being priced like it's making $6B/year today and it's future is certain.

Beyond that, is the automotive industry long for this world? People are re-urbanizing and city traffic is only getting worse. Self-driving vehicles will mean that being driven unlimited places might fall to $50-100/mo which is significantly less than the $400+/mo of car payments, insurance, gas, parking, maintenance, etc. Why should I spend $631/mo for a $35,000 car plus insurance, gas, parking, maintenance when I can just get driven around for a fraction of that cost? Today, Uber's help is more limited since the human driver costs a lot of money per mile. If that future comes to pass, there will be a lot fewer cars manufactured and bought which limits Tesla's value.

If an autonomous car is serving 25 people a day, that's a lot fewer vehicles that need to be bought. World vehicle production is around 90M/year and Toyota and Volkswagen are 10M of that each. If the demand for vehicles falls to 4% of its current demand, that's only 3.6M vehicles per year. Even if Tesla makes 100% of those vehicles, they don't come close to being the next Toyota or Volkswagen. Even if an autonomous vehicle only serves 10 people a day, that cuts the vehicle market down to 9M. Even if an autonomous vehicle can only serve 4 people a day, that cuts the market to 22.5M. The future market for vehicles might be pretty small compared to the current one and so even if Tesla hits a Toyota or Volkswagen-like 10% of the market, it might not be a large market.

And self-driving services are likely to have stiff price competition. Unlike an Uber competitor that has the network effects of having drivers already signed up, it's relatively cheap to blanket a city with self-driving vehicles. $20,000/mo isn't a huge run rate to to buy 50 vehicles at $400/mo and that will let you place a vehicle within a short distance of everyone in a city like San Francisco (47 square miles). You could position them so that they're usually less than half a mile away to pick you up. $20,000/mo isn't a huge run rate to get your service started and you can buy more vehicles as you get riders. So, even if you think that Tesla might be that self-driving network and will make profits that way, I think it's more likely that the space will have a lot of competition that will push margins down. Waymo and GM/Cruze are well on their way. Nissan and Toyota are expecting to enter the game in a few years. Uber wants to be in this space.

It just seems like Tesla is more likely to become Mazda than Toyota and that the auto industry might be facing a large market-shrinking threat in self-driving cars. As such, it's hard (for me) to look at Tesla's market value and see the potential for a lot of appreciation over the long term. They're already worth more than most successful auto makers.
