If there’s anybody out there who is requiring Pro Tools or anything else because it excludes a particular group disproportionately, that would be discriminatory

I think that’s a bit of a stretch. The core concepts of PT are available even in Pro Tools First (free). They’re requiring PT simply because it’s the industry standard in audio recording/production. Though I agree with the author, the use of it in podcasting is perplexing.

If we’re going to go down this Avenue, the same parallels could be made for Adobe products and the gatekeeping they had, even before they went to a SaaS model.

It’s unfortunate that the industry requires PT proficiency, but it literally wrote the book on DAWs. Plenty of producers/musicians use alternative software that’s cheaper or better equipped, but the PT pendulum has long swung; since they’re all using PT key mappings.

Can’t be as bad as a full-screen modal making me accept cookies to read a silly article.

“...not only has there been a recent spike in people deciding to postpone (or even better, entirely avoid) procreation...”

- Aight, I’m out.

Judging by the other comments, others share my sentiments.

IIRC, AWS had the free tier first. Which is what brought me in. I wasn’t trying to change the world, but I’ll take free server space if they’re giving it away.

Then they sealed the deal when a little Echo skill I wrote for myself gave me (and continues to give me) got me $100/month in AWS credits.

Combine that with every place of work using AWS, and I’m pretty much married to it. I at least know the UI, and for a programming who hates configuration, that means a lot (as far as getting in and getting out quickly).

I’m thinking I’ll only consider remote work from now on...

It’s not uncommon to pay an adoption fee for animals, either. I’ve “paid” a few hundred dollars for my equally-lovable adopted pets over the years, too.

It’s a great trade-off; because it pays people’s salaries, keeps animals out of kill-shelters, and benefits tertiary programs who may train or otherwise aide these unwanted animals.

A price I’m happy to pay.

“In other words, we did not expect a NaN value to appear there and put too much confidence in our decision."

Man, I’ve been bitten by that one too many times.

Lol, “Topika”

Also, don’t forget user/pass prompt in a URL.

There is no ambiguity.

But they might have picked a different delimiter for that in this alternative future. Or perhaps realized it was a bad idea earlier.

IPv6 addresses are a different story. We definitely would have chosen a different character to delimit IPv6 addresses in this future.

These Apple tactics are nothing new. Why is DHH acting so surprised?
