When a webpage loads that looks like it was made in the 90’s, no ads, and is too wide for mobile so I have to drag from side to side, I know the content is gonna be legit.

I got two ads that took up 2/3rds of the screen :(

Yeah...and I like how if you hit the 'hide ad' arrow, it veeeery slowly scrolls out of the way. Keep it classy. And don't put a 'donate' button and then pack the page with so many ads I have to use an adblocker[1] to actually view the content in a non-rage-inducing way.

[1] yes, yes...I know...always use an ad blocker.

Yes. While these claims might be hyperbolic and simplistic, I don’t think they’re way off the mark.

The above issue, whilst relevant and worth factoring, doesn’t disprove this claim IMO.

Have you observed any other path for new want-to-be developers other than boot camps that tends to yield better outcomes ?

Activity is the signal. Self taught but goes to a ton of meetups. Enrolled in one of the legit online master's programs, etc. Ofttimes bootcamps can appear on these resumes. Someone did a bootcamp, realized it wasn't enough and kept growing in a manner.

People who treat the bootcamp as the terminal level of knowledge plateau.

Can't the same be said for University? I know lots of classmates who didn't do anything outside of what's mandatory. They wouldn't have a GitHub account if they weren't forced to in a class for example.

Not the person you are asking, but I'd say a genuine interest in the field.

A couple of simple hobby projects and participation in meetups and chats can give both faster ramp-up (beyond very basic) and solid job leads. My 2c.

Tab suspender is your friend

I remember overseas calls having a huge lag. Now I can call across and works and chat with perfect audio and video. I think we’re romanticizing the past and failing to recognize the ways in which calls are so much better.

Nothing can avoid the speed-of-light lag, but full-duplex and things have made it certainly better.

It's very noticeable on globe-spanning links (which is where video actually starts to help because you can use the silent visual cues).

In Hebrew the days of the week are named numerically: first day, second day etc. Sunday is the first day of the week in israel. Saturday, the last day of the Hebrew week is the only one not named numerically, it’s called sabbath.

And easy linking and bi-directional linking. Once you experience these two features it’s very hard to imagine notes without it. That’s the main reason I couldn’t go with the authors workflow of just plain text files.

I’m not sure I agree with the narrative that 1$ earned as a contractor is worth less than 1$ earned as an employee. Seems to me that the opposite is true. A contractor can get much more creative with taxes, off setting loads of expenses against his income thus having a significantly lower effective tax rate than the employee with equivalent gross income.

Let’s say OF was forced to switch to crypto payments. They could make the switch tomorrow. Link to a few popular crypto exchanges so that customers know where to buy crypto and Bob’s your uncle.

How long until their customer service system gets flooded with questions about how to use cryptocurrency, and complaints from users who's funds got stolen from XYZ shady exchange.

99% of normal people find cryptocurrency strange and inscrutable, and if you think otherwise you're in a bubble.
