[Your Area Code]-867-5309 is what I always use - alas they are becoming wise to that

[areaCode]-555-1212 is one I use, but any 555 prefix will work as it is not meant for actual phone numbers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/555_(telephone_number)

I've used 213-456-7890 a few times on throwaway things.

cool example :)

This is the story I keep thinking back to with the rise of LLMs, but I could not think of the name for it, so thank you!

Man - I knew this in my teens - I just didn't DO it.

Not who you were responding to, but in your original statement you wrote "I do not think it’s healthy for adults to do this [sic] I think pets are wonderful for children"

By explicitly calling out that "[they] are wonderful for children" you are implicitly calling into question their value for adults. Whether that was your intention or not, it's certainly how I read your statement.

Without any actual numbers given, this reads like any number of other hit pieces on younger generations that have been written up through the years. Especially coming from the editorial pages.

I have one that I actually like, but it works a bit differently - instead of being capacitive on the faucet - which is infuriating, there is a sensor in the toe kick area under the sink, so if you wave your foot there it turns the water on/off.

That sounds... fun... for people with mobility issues.

I have the touch based sensor, came with the rental property. I quite love it: I used to mostly leave water running when doing a couple dishes, but now it's basically instant on or off with the slightest effort.

I do want the floor control though! We do have the iot addon, so it is wirelessly controllable. Building a non-contact foot detector is on my to-do list.

Via Google Home the delay is 1-2 seconds which kind of sucks, but maybe there's a faster local network control, maybe there's a home-assistant base I can work with.

No surprise but man people are real black holes of energy on these topics, eh? You do you, but after a couple days living here the touch sensor quickly went from occasional accidental bother that was pretty easy to avoid to second mature. Similarly yes a foot sensor might be an issue for some people, but to me, it's be a nice additive on-control.

HA - I wrote the same comment, including the bit about "why is it in Reminders and not Notes?" - it really is just inexplicable

Even if it feels oddly out of place there and more appropriate for Notes, kudos to whomever on the Reminders app team advocated for and shoehorned in that featureset.

This doesn't solve all the problems the app mentioned is solving, but if you're using iOS (based on the Apple Notes) - Reminders is oddly a solid grocery list tool:

- It can be shared with others - It can be updated natively with Siri voice commands ("Hey Siri - Add eggs to grocery list" works out of the box) - It gives other users notifications when it changes (this is also my major negative) - It "knows" it's a grocery list and tries to do some smart grouping/labeling (Dairy, Sauces, etc)

I'm just really not sure why that's built into Reminders and not Notes

You can control the notifications – just go into the Managed Shared List section, and there's an area to control notifications when adding (on by default) and when completing (off by default) items.

Currently this is a fever dream of non-Euclidean space - but the fact that it can reliably do this at all is extremely impressive.

> but the fact that it can reliably do this at all is extremely impressive

The better question is could you achieve the same thing using much less computing power and simpler methods? Would a Markov chain be able to do the same thing? If so, I'd have to with the articles sentiment, this burns a bunch of electricity to do something with extreme inefficiency and waste.

If only there were a way to play Quake 2 on a 90mhz Pentium with 16MB of RAM...

It's funny how as soon as I read to Netherlands, my brain back-tracked to correct me on the pronunciation.

If anyone else is ever in the Netherlands and has a chance, due the tour in Gouda, it's delightful and you get to try a bunch of gouda cheese!

I hate that I can’t say the word without saying it right, but that means that everyone else thinks I’m saying it wrong. Haha

Agreed btw, the tour in Gouda is wonderful. Show up for the morning when they have the cheese market; it’s a really fun time.

one of my pet peeves is "Gouda" puns that rely on it being pronounced like "good-er"

It's a shame more people aren't taught gouda pronounce it.

It's Ghowda right? The gh like in argh and the ow in brown.

Yes somewhat, but try to keep the 'h' to a minimum and extend the 'g' like you're gargling. :-)

Yes!

Say it. Say "chowda"
