I have had bank accounts only with credit unions for the last 20 years. I have never found a need to open an account with one of the big banks. That said, people look at me like I’m crazy when I mention this.

I am in the same boat. I think I will get a lot more of time back if they kill old

Can a robot follow your instructions ? When you come back from your walk, can you shout from outside to have it open the door ? Can you also shout from outside to have it pack up the valuables and hand it over to you ?

I had been a customer of Amazon for almost 20 years. I had Prime since day one. For me the breaking point was when they increased the fee and then decided to have ads for Prime Video. I sold the few Amazon stocks I had, and canceled Prime.

I found after I canceled Prime, my Amazon spending significantly went down. Sometimes I will add something to the cart, look at the shipping fee, and decide to abandon the cart. Canceling Prime made me realize I was ordering a lot of junk I didn’t need.

I switched from Apple Watch to a Garmin Venu. The battery lasts for a week, and many of the sensors are more accurate.

And that's the fancy screen, gimmick edition garmin watch - the normal MIP display garmin watches (even an old, midrange Forerunner 255) will easily get a couple of weeks of battery life, more for the higher end ones.

OLED is just the wrong screen tech for these devices, never made any sense to me given how little I care about graphics and how little time I spend reading the display.

But it's not the screen that causes it to lose energy as fast, but the general purpose OS with a decent CPU.

As an example, my power is generated by one company and distributed by PG&E. I pay $57 for power generation and $140 or so for distribution. PG&E reported close to [1] $2.5B profits for last year. My bills have been going up for $50/month to over $400/month in the last four years.

I had been an Apple Watch user until it died after I was in a water park. It is supposed to be waterproof, but I guess Apple wants me to refresh after two years.

I switched to a Garmin Venu 3. It is better than AW in many aspects, but is also lacking in some. But the Connect app is a lot better than Apple Health.

I wonder what happens to the gut bacteria ? Do they also freeze and get thawed ? If so, are those bacterium also having a special adaptation, or is it a function of the host ?

My experience is very similar. I believe there are two primary reasons for this: 1. People are wealthier, and wealthier people tend to be more independent. 2. Population density is higher. Places with lower density, such as villages still tend to have that people to people connection like in the old days

I grew up poor, in a village, but otherwise have had a fairly rich life. I've landed on the other side: well off and in the city. Still alone, however.

The hassle of finding my way in life and finally doing it made me "overly independent" given common sentiment.

I'm generally fine, yet outside of posts like this... I have absolutely no interest to connect. When people at work try to get close I actually feel saddened by my incapability.

The argument could certainly be made that opening up strengthens. That may be true. It may also be a transactional relationship going the other way.

I've had that vulnerability exploited enough. It's not as simple as "we like smooshing our meat bits together". Game theory exists.

Avoidance, yes, but show me where it has failed... me.

Rhetorical, not an accusation: it feels very strange to judge others for their independence. Why, so you can benefit?

Personally, the question isn't "why aren't people socializing". It's: "why is it worthwhile?". There's no universal answer - we must find it, I'm still trying.

All of this to say, we all play our hands. Sometimes too well.

“why is it worthwhile” - generally human connection is a psychological need, if we are not conscious of it, the need will get filled with weird behaviors we don’t understand.

It sounds like you have been hurt by connection; I would encourage you to put some effort into understanding where your past experiences lead to you being exploited. If you can consciously learn how to identify safe people (they do exist) it will help with connection immensely.

Same for me too. I tried different VR headsets, but could not use them for more than 15 minutes without getting dizzy.
