Looks like they were already using it as a backup:

but last commit a year ago? I guess they will push latest commits soon

I thought some variant of popcorntime was running their own gitlab server at some point because of this exact issue.

There's still the risk of losing server hosting and/or network uplink. So it's prudent to use anonymously linked reverse proxies, which are ~disposable.
