I'm not sure anyone is saying that the 5W A14 is faster than a 100W i9 (at least for sustained performance).
I don't see why you should say that 'no way' an M1 (with appropriate cooling etc) is going to outperform a desktop class system - if you read the Anandtech review it's clearly superior to competing architectures in many respects and is built on a better process technology.
