Air Protein raises $32m USD Series A to make ‘meat’ out of the ether (agfundernews.com)

Never mind human food. Imagine raising animals with feedstocks that cut out the whole agriculture thing - protein feed straight from air, water, electricity.

You mean something like a carp pond? Dig a hole, fill it with water, throw chickenshit or other nitrogen-rich fertilizer in, wait for algae to grow that are then turned into meat by carp or similar fish.

What is the point of fancy startups like these except being an investment sink?

The protein is scalable. A carp pond is still agriculture, essentially. Needs location, weather, monitoring. Its a batch process.

Imagine a factory that makes energy bars could have a unit on the floor that emits protein oil in measured quantities as needed. Plug it in and go. Clearly a win for automation.

Quorn?

Here's what's interesting: in the 1960s the British government actually mounted a research program because there were concerns about a protein shortage in the 1990s and came up with a couple of microorganisms that you could grow in a fermenter and eat, if you really had to. Nowadays protein concentrate is a lifestyle choice.
