Ask HN: Any tips for using a 15-year old ThinkPad as main computer? (willem.com)

I have a 13-year-old T410 ThinkPad. It's still very usable. In many ways, it's more useful and pleasant to use than the ThinkPad P53 that is meant to replace it.

It's main drawback for today's me is the low 'resolution' of the screen in modern-day-terms. These days a 1920x1080 is almost mandatory as a minimum.

As an experiment, I think there is a lot to learn about the ‘modern way of working’ by doing exactly the opposite.

Therefore I have switched off my modern gear and intend to use an old X200 with a minimal Debian/GNU installation to see how far I'll get.

Any thoughts or tips for making this old computer live up to its legacy?

don't expect VSCode to run well.

Trick it out with as much RAM as you can.

upgrade to an SSD.

ChromeOS works great on older ThinkPads...

Thanks for the idea! I never considered it to be an option outside chromebooks.

I have been using CloudReady ChromeOS built from Neverware (company).. Can highly recommend. It had been purchased by Google since...
