There are many people who prioritize flashy trends and low effort accomplishments. I find that exceedingly boring irrespective of how much energy and excitement they might display for their trivial interest. Perhaps that makes me a covert narcissist as suggested by the article, but I would rather go do my own thing than attempt to impress people with all my wonderful knowledge I already know they don’t want to hear. I have also noticed those boring people seem equally bored, disgusted, or hostile to things outside their focused area of attention.
The flashy, braggart type is who they meant is boring, I believe. They are not being hypocritical in my opinion as the flashy, braggart person is uninterested in talking about anything but their interest while GP doesn't want to hear them brag about it. It's not a lack of interest in the subject, it's the fact that the subject isn't the point, it's the "look at how good I am at $subject" that the braggart is worried about.
