Cosmic Desktop: Closing in on a Cosmic Alpha (system76.com)

How's the support for VRR, HDR and fractional scaling on Cosmic? The first DE implementing these three I am switching to immediately. (KDE is really close, to be fair)

VRR, fractional scaling, and 10-bit color depth is already supported. HDR metadata is not yet supported. These will be refined before the final release.

KDE should already support VRR and fractional scaling with more improvements coming in Plasma 6, and no non-fullscreen HDR yet until the Wayland color management protocol gets finalized

Honestly these are the only features keeping me on Windows.

I really hope they have a proper global solution for kinetic / inertial scrolling... Already filed an issue[1], but I think they have more important stuff todo :-)

That repository is a gnome-shell extension, unrelated to cosmic-epoch.

Thank you. I cloned the issue to https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-epoch/issues/204, hopefully this is the right one...

my next laptop will be a System76. I wish they had ARM options, but I'll take what I can get!

I wish they were available in India :-(

Looking forward to switching just to get rid of the terrible Pop Shop. It has to be the worst open source software I've used.

It's possible to install the `cosmic-store`, but it will be some time before it's ready to replace the elementary appcenter.

I don't see any kind of db in cosmic-store's dependencies. So is it going to have the exact same memory usage problems as elementary appcenter?

Where the elementary appcenter needs 900 MB, and KDE Discover needs 600 MB, the COSMIC Store needs only 60 MB. The COSMIC Store uses serde to serialize package metadata into a bitcode format, which uses significantly less memory and enables rapid application startup times. As a result, it does not need to run in the background, and it can search the entire database in realtime within 5ms.

Amazing, thanks for your work!

pop!_os comes with flakpak enabled so i always just avoid the store and head to flathub[0]

I thought this was already at full release lol. Never knew what features Cosmic was supposed to add on top of Gnome

Cosmic is a from scratch DE. Not the gnome with extension.

They are both called Cosmic to make things less confusing.

That explains my confusion quite a bit. Thanks for letting me know!
