Scientists identify the evolutionary "purpose" of consciousness (scitechdaily.com)

Shouldn't we be extremely suspicious of ascribing purpose to any evolutionary outcome? "Fitness" is really only of the short period of reproduction, if conditions are stable that "fitness" might keep happening, but when conditions change, the "purpose" changes as well.

This study seems to make two assumptions: that we know what consciousness is (we don't) and that birds (or for that matter any animals) don't have it (how would we know?).
