[flagged] All CDC data is no longer visible to comply with executive orders (cdc.gov)

Looks like /r/datahoarder was backing it up just in time:

There is nothing good that come from this. We are headed for disaster, especially if bird flu or something else starts spreading quickly enough.

Like the tb outbreak happening now? The good thing is nobody will know it’s happening.

> It should be ok to post about that

> "Data.CDC.gov is temporarily offline"

Like a penetration test or a security test, you don't know where you're out of compliance until you perform an audit; you don't normally shut down your site in the meantime.

The correct way to comply with this is to suggest that you don't believe that you're out of compliance, and to request specific guidance on which particular datasets aren't in compliance that should be removed.

Onward into the new dark age

Reminds me of A Canticle for Leibowitz.

Why does nobody refuse to follow these orders? They’re being issued by someone who flagrantly doesn’t follow the rules.

They’ll just be replaced with someone who does follow the order

Maybe. Maybe not. So call that bluff.

It is quite literally a legal risk to ignore these orders.

"I was just following orders"

Yes.

Indeed. The CDC’s data are funded by the public. An argument can be made that working for the public means ensuring the public has access to what they own.

It’s illegal to defy the law here but “anti-democratic” is a huge stretch unless you know how “the public” feels on this specific issue. Clearly people voted for Trump for all sorts of reasons and do not wholly align on everything he campaigned for.

“Defy the law” is nuanced. The government routinely operates by coming up with some aggressive interpretation of the law, doing something based on that, and seeing what happens in litigation. That was the basis of Biden’s student loan policies, opening up the border, etc. Heck, it’s the basis of our entire skilled immigration system, where we pretend like people who fully intend to seek permanent residence are genuine “nonimmigrant” temporary workers (which is what the statute says).

And these actions aren’t intruding on private citizens or the co-equal branches of government. Supervising executive branch employees is the core of the President’s role. I think Trump voters may have many disagreements on say “no taxes on tips.” I think approximately 0% want him to be anything less aggressive about the law when it comes to supervising the employees who work for him. The “Resistance” last time—which recall happened as soon as he was inaugurated—was a huge “fuck you” to them and democracy itself. It solidified the belief that democrats run the government no matter who wins the election.

I’m not sure how the first part of your comment is related. I was referring to the potential defying of Trump’s orders by CDC employees (the topic).

The main point was about “anti-democratic” which again only makes sense if you know that it is the public’s will that e.g. the CDC data is dismantled (the topic). You still haven’t given a convincing argument that that is true, other than “I think approximately 0%..” Do you have anything more substantial than “I think”, because _I think_ millions of voters voted vaguely on “the economy” and “immigration” and don’t en-masse support something like “less CDC data”.

You’re saying he’s “defying the law.” My point is that I’m sure he has legal eggheads invoking aggressive interpretations of the law, like every administration does.

Regarding the second point, one of Trump’s main pitches was to revert the use of progressive social theories and terminology in government. Of course it’s going to take some time to clean up the web pages.

Yikes.

Getting dangerously close to saying the quiet part out loud with that crack about "the right people".

This seems like an overly paranoid worldview and an attempt to blame me for your "doom and gloom" view of the world.

Right people as in "people who will do the job they are paid to do", with the wrong people being "people who refuse to do the job they are paid to do".

You know, the standard, widely accepted definition of "the right people".

It's fun to what people pretend that they are stupid. You know very well what they meant:

the people that will run the train cars regardless of the cargo.

You know, the standard, widely accepted definition of "the right people".

In no way is “right people” commonly defined as “people who will commit genocide”.

These types of arguments aren’t good faith and are actually quite boring.

"These types of arguments aren’t good faith and are actually quite boring."

Yes, I agree but I am tired of watching yall make them.

Did you just "I know you are, but what am I?"

I mean, literally, yes. Because that's the level of retort that your writing merits.

My writing is backed up data and sound arguments.

I’m guessing “what your writing merits” says more about your inability to do the same.

I wrote a webapp to pull your local covid wastewater data from cdc data. It's still working, so they either left their feeds in place or haven't gotten to them yet.

This is what fascism looks like.

https://www.census.gov/ is also offline.

Is it? Seems up to me.

[edit] Oh, I see, the actual 2020 census data is down: https://www.census.gov/2020results

Says for maintenance.

The main site was replaced with a mostly empty blank page earlier today.

The bizarre thing was that the page source at that time had almost nothing except some odd javascript to build a "508 Daily Report" table of Jira tickets or some nonsense.

That view appears to still be up here: https://www.census.gov/main/

I can't really blame someone for a bad deployment given the raging government dumpster fires at the moment.

Lots of links seem down for "maintenance". Not just the 2020 census.

It was down, but it is back now.

Down for me...

Is the census data even available by other means nowadays? The census is a core constitutional requirement of the federal government.

/r/DataHoarder/ is doing us all a solid

not for me

Is this malicious compliance or is the data all really in violation of the EO?

I think it’s pretty reasonable that it might take more than 2 days to review all CDC datasets for whether they “inculcate or promote gender ideology”. If the administration wanted to avoid interruptions in access they should have provided a longer timeline.

I think they should have been more specific with their wording of the order. It does not specifically say studies or datasets, but it doesn't make it clear that they should be excluded. The actual order:

- Take down all outward facing media (websites, social media accounts, etc.) that inculcate or promote gender ideology.

- Withdraw any final or pending documents, directives, orders, regulations, materials, forms, communications, statements, and plans that inculcate or promote gender ideology.

The order itself is poorly written, and was clearly drafted by someone who understands neither government process or the confusing reality of biological sex. For example, it seems not to acknowledge the factual biological reality of intersex people at all.

Worse, It provides no clear definitions, funding, or means to enforce compliance. Just an unreasonable and vague demand, especially when applied to the work of scientists.

It belies a middle school level understanding of the world we live in, and it's ridiculous demands should be met with only scorn and derision. This is not how functional grown ups behave, it's how angry children who believe that all complex problems have simple answers behave.

It does say "temporarily offline" while they adjust the transgender settings.

why would the whole site be taken offline?

I read the beginning of the executive order:

> Across the country, ideologues who deny the biological reality of sex have increasingly used legal and other socially coercive means to permit men to self-identify as women and gain access to intimate single-sex spaces and activities designed for women, from women's domestic abuse shelters to women's workplace showers. This is wrong.

This... isn't necessarily something I'd disagree with. This being the Trump administration, I suppose there might be some skeletons hiding later on in the text.

They also talk about the distinction between "sex" and "gender". You're still free to choose any gender you like!
